Two answers matter more than the rest. The valley has no ticket of its own, so what you are comparing is whether a fare already pays the cellar doors. And a day from Adelaide spends about two hours on the road, while a day that starts in the Barossa spends none.
Do you need a ticket to visit the Barossa Valley?
No. The Barossa is a wine region with no gate, so there is no ticket to buy. You pay a tour fare, and each cellar door charges its own tasting fee unless your fare already includes it.
How much do Barossa Valley wine tours cost?
From $72 for the hop-on hop-off bus, where tastings and lunch are extra. Day tours from Adelaide with tastings and lunch in the fare start at $113, and the eight-guest winemakers' day is $189. The trike and Mustang rides for two are $187 per person. Each card shows the current fare.
Which tours include the tasting fees?
Most guided days do, including the premium tasting day with chocolate, the winemakers' day, the Small Batch days and the Valley Wine Tours days. The hop-on hop-off bus and the Wine Diva small-group day leave the tastings to be paid at each venue, and the trike and Mustang listings do not say.
How far is the Barossa Valley from Adelaide?
About an hour's drive north-east of Adelaide. Tourism Australia gives the distance from Adelaide Airport as 76 km.
Can you do a day trip from Adelaide?
Yes. The day tours pick up in Adelaide city or Glenelg and run 7.5 to 9 hours, with about an hour on the road each way.
Is lunch included on the wine tours?
On most guided days, yes: a platter, a pub lunch or a multi-course restaurant lunch. The hop-on hop-off bus and the half-day trike and Mustang rides leave lunch out.
Do any tours start inside the valley?
Yes. The Valley Wine Tours days pick up from your Barossa accommodation, the trike and Mustang rides start in Nuriootpa, the e-bike tour meets at the Yalumba cellar door in Angaston, and the hop-on hop-off bus stops at the Barossa Visitor Centre in Tanunda.
What is the best wine tour for a first visit?

Are there private Barossa Valley wine tours?
Yes. There is a private day from Adelaide for two to six and a Barossa-based day for a group of up to four. The trike and 1966 Mustang rides are private for two.
Can children go on the wine tours?
Most wine days are for adults. The Mustang ride takes children from 8, the hop-on hop-off bus takes children with an adult, and the premium tasting day from Adelaide is not suitable for children under 5.
Can I cancel a wine tour?
Yes. Every tour listed here refunds in full if you cancel at least 24 hours before it starts.
When is the best time to visit the Barossa Valley?
Tourism Australia rates autumn, March to May, the best: warm days and cool evenings. The average high at Nuriootpa is 30.3 °C in January and 13.6 °C in July, which has about ten rain days.
When is the next Barossa Vintage Festival?
The Barossa Vintage Festival runs from 21 to 25 April 2027. It is held every two years, with five days of long lunches, masterclasses, markets, parades and concerts.
Can you get to the Barossa Valley by public transport?
Partly. The Adelaide Metro train runs to Gawler, and a LinkSA bus connects Gawler with the valley. LinkSA also runs Keoride, a door-to-door service inside the valley.
Where is the visitor centre?
The Barossa Visitor Centre is at 66-68 Murray Street, Tanunda. It opens 9:00-17:00 on weekdays, 9:00-16:00 on Saturday, and 10:00-16:00 on Sunday and public holidays.
What wine is the Barossa known for?
Rich reds and fortified wines, as Tourism Australia puts it. It also describes the region's Shiraz, Grenache, Mataro, Cabernet Sauvignon and Semillon vines as the world's oldest continuously producing.
Where were the valley's first vineyards planted?
At the site of Chateau Tanunda. The estate gives 1843 for the valley's first vineyards and 1890 for its bluestone winery.
When was Seppeltsfield founded?
In 1851. The estate is at 730 Seppeltsfield Road, and bookings are essential at its cellar door.
Can you taste the 100 Year Old Para tawny?
Yes, in the Centennial Cellar at Seppeltsfield, by booking with the estate. The estate closes on Good Friday, Christmas Day, Boxing Day and New Year's Day.
When is the Barossa Farmers Market?
The Barossa Farmers Market runs every Saturday, 7:30-11:30. It is held in the Vintners Shed at 740 Stockwell Road, Angaston.
Do tours pick up from Glenelg?
Yes. The premium tasting day with chocolate, the Barossa and Hahndorf wine day, the Wine Diva day and the winemakers' day all pick up in Glenelg as well as Adelaide city.
How big are the groups?
They run from two on the trike and Mustang rides to six on the Small Batch and Valley Wine Tours days. The winemakers' day takes eight and the e-bike tour ten. The coaches and the hop-on hop-off bus carry up to 20.
How does the hop-on hop-off tour work?
The bus runs a loop of 10 to 15 venues that takes about an hour. You choose about four to get off at, and pay for tastings and food at each one.
Are the wine tours wheelchair accessible?
None of the tours listed here is sold as wheelchair accessible. Ask the operator before you book if anyone in your group uses a wheelchair.
Do I need to drive in the Barossa?
No. Every tour listed here includes the driving. If you drive yourself, whoever is at the wheel sits out the tastings.
What does the e-bike tour include?
The e-bike, lunch, snacks, wine, coffee or tea, a Yalumba cellar tour with a barrel tasting, and a cooperage tour. It meets at 40 Eden Valley Road, Angaston, at 9:00.
Is Hahndorf in the Barossa Valley?
No. Hahndorf is in the Adelaide Hills, not the Barossa. The Hahndorf combination days from Adelaide visit both on the same day.
Is Maggie Beer's Farm Shop on a tour?
Yes: the Valley Wine Tours days and the Barossa and Hahndorf wine day stop there. Maggie Beer's Farm Shop is at 50 Pheasant Farm Road, Nuriootpa.
Where does the trike tour start?
At the Provenance front car park, 18-28 Tanunda Road, Nuriootpa, or with pickup from selected Barossa hotels. There is a 250 kg combined weight limit for the two passengers.
How long are Barossa Valley tours?
The trike and Mustang rides take 3.5 hours, and the days that start inside the valley 6 to 6.5 hours. Days from Adelaide run 7.5 to 9 hours, about two of them on the road.
